Participate in a survey about health inequalities in diabetes mellitus

The HEALTHINESS study is a survey that researchers at the University of Dundee are running.  It aims to help researchers understand how a person’s social circumstances interact with their diabetes care, complications and diabetes control. This information will be important to help researchers assess the impact of social circumstances on diabetes mellitus and inform future research and strategies to improve diabetes care.

What is involved in the survey?

The survey should take a maximum of fifteen minutes to complete, and can be completed on a desktop computer, laptop, tablet, or smart phone.  If you would prefer, you can request a paper copy of the survey or for a member of the study team to complete this with you over the telephone.  You will be asked questions about yourself such as your date of birth, name and postcode. We will ask your permission to link your responses to some routinely collected medical data.  This is to allow us to see how these circumstances interact with your diabetes.  We will also ask if you would be willing to be sent a shortened version of the survey in around one year to 18 months time.

You will then proceed to the main survey questions which will include questions on your occupation, sex, ethnicity, income, household, education, quality of life and health literacy levels.

You can take part if:

  • You are 18 years old or older, and;
  • You are able to read/speak/understand the English language, and;
  • You are able to understand and provide informed consent, and;
  • You are normally resident in NHS Tayside
  • You have a diagnosis of diabetes mellitus (any type)
